Water disinfection using durable ceramic filter coated with silver nanoparticles synthesized using actinomycetes

Abstract Contamination with pathogens degrades water quality and is a major cause of many waterborne diseases. The aim this research to reduce the global disease burden by presenting an efficient, durable, low-cost ceramic filter impregnated actinomycetes-mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for disinfection in rural areas. This marks first report on simultaneous biosynthesis AgNPs utilizing cell-free supernatants obtained from terrestrial actinomycetes. An easy efficient method was used impregnate onto using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). APTES linker anchored surface through Si–O–Si bridges, while terminal amino groups coordinate AgNPs. Notably, observed inhibition zone around ~ 18 mm, suggesting that ions were responsible antibacterial activity. After 30 min sonication, only insignificant traces released filter, making it stable long-term activity when treating water. According laboratory simulation experiments, untreated can reject about 99% spiked bacteria, efficiency coated 100% due synergistic effect between filtration In addition, average concentration dissolved outlet ultrafiltration system during three months 33.7 μg/L, far below permissible limit (100 μg/L) drinking Overall, work offers suitable affordable treatment strategy low-income, isolated, societies developing countries.
